WestWorld
by J. E. De Matteo
Solid
Yul Brynner is the
original Terminator, even to the exposed electronic
eye. His cold and relentless character was as terrifying
in 1973 as Arnold's was more than a decade
later. But the remarkable thing about Brynner,
unlike Arnold, he was a romantic lead actor.
Sure he did some westerns (The Magnificent 7
among them), but he was the King in The King and I.
Now tell me, can you picture Schwarzenegger waltzing
around a palace? Although, Yul had a Germanic
accent, himself.
Comedian, Richard Benjamin (great in
The Sunshine Boys), does an
outstanding job in Westworld, and he's only a
tourist.
Yes, if you've never seen it,
or if you haven't seen it in years, this weekend is a
good time to rent it. And if it's early enough
in the week, you may be able to order it above; it's
worth adding to your collection.

1.) The basic theme of Westworld is that man,
in his infinite arrogance, creates a theme park using science he doesn't
fully understand. The result? The theme park's attractions
become deadly. Sound familiar? It should. Crichton
recycled the theme years later to write Jurassic Park and The
Lost World, also major motion pictures.
2.) Is Majel Barrett Rodenbury any relation to Gene Rodenbury? Yes, indeed! She's his wife. Gene Rodenbury, creator of Star Trek cast Majel Barrett as Nurse Christine Chapel on the original Star Trek Series. She returned to Star Trek the Next Generation playing Counselor Deanna Troy's mother. She is also the voice of used by the computers on every
Star Trek television program made after the original series, as well as the Star Trek films. This is just the tip of the iceberg, however, as she has been working steadily all these years in
everything from TV's Leave it to Beaver the original The Quick and The Dead (1963),TV's General Hospital, and most recently, Mars and Beyond (2000).
