Putting
Comics on the Cutting Edge: Blade
by Christian
De Matteo
X-Men has gained the
title of the groundbreaking film that made comic
book movies respectable, but Blade broke
that ground a long time ago, and did so with no
safety net.
Finding balls when movies like Spawn
lost theirs, Blade broke through the
comic-rating barrier, making an R-Rated movie
from a comic that could only be an R-rated
movie. This
was a first.
Up until this point, big Hollywood
producer types thought a comic book based movie
wouldn’t make any money, because the kiddies
wouldn’t be able to see it…even when they
shouldn’t be seeing it anyway.
(Don’t get me started on Spawn.)
But Blade did it.
Allowing a bad-ass Vampire killer to be
just that, Wesley Snipes plays the perfect bad
mutha, kicking ass and too cool to chew bubble
gum. Going
outrageous with the special effects, action
moves (flips so impossible, John Woo would pop a
woody), and with the blood and guts, Blade is
the ultimate in hardcore horror/action, complete
with cool lines.
All this and never does it take itself
too seriously.
How can you know that for sure?
When one of the coolest lines is, “Some
muthafuckas always gotta ice-skate up hill”
and Blade quotes (believe it or not) Kentucky
Fried Movie, you know it ain’t taking
itself too seriously.
Throw in the role that
finally made me see Kris Kristoferson as cool, a
huge disgusting mess named Pearl, Donal Logue (The
Tao of Steve) as a jackass vampire, and
Steven Dorff as the chic, hip Vampire hell bent
on taking over the Vampire world and ours as
well, and you’ve got a fun, kick-ass film with
some of the coolest gore ever.
Oh, and don’t forget the
zombies, you can’t forget the zombies.
All and all, Blade
is a great re-watchable watch, fun every time,
great with beer and pizza and From Dusk till
Dawn and John Carpenter’s Vampires.

If you like the movie, you'll want
this DVD. It has great background info about the movie.
I enjoyed the commentary, but most of all, this is differently a
re-watchable movie.
We've had 2 movie parties where we backed to back Blade and
Blade II. Everyone had a great time, and some even stayed
to watch commentary after some of the others left.
