And
then there’s that pesky category, the Dramedy:
Breaking Up
by

Solid
Granted the main reason I wanted to see
this film was to have two hours of my life
filled with staring at Salma Hayek (Fools
Rush In), I was pleasantly surprised by a
very non-Hollywood version of the When Harry
Met Sally formula.
Starring Russell Crowe (Gladiator,
L.A. Confidential) and Salma Hayek—and
practically no one else at all—the film is
about exactly what the title says.
It chronicles a relationship that seems
simultaneously doomed and charmed through a very
natural, realistic, and often-painful course.
Complete with some of the most realistic
relationship arguments, quarrels, make-ups and
break-ups I’ve ever seen on film, the story of
the two lovers gives both actors a great
opportunity to show off some top-notch acting
ability, so well at times that you feel like a
voyeur for watching.
The film is a Dramedy, meaning that it
has some very funny comedic moments
(particularly two dream sequences) and also some
heavy duty emotional content, some of which will
make you forget for a while that the movie had
been previously making you laugh…and might
again.
A fun and truthful movie, this one also
hits the qualifying mark for a good date flick
that both genders can enjoy.
