Bridget Jones’s Diary

Solid
If I were Ebert working for Hugereviews.com I would give this flick a
very enthusiastic Solid up.
File this under very enjoyable date
movies that the guy can enjoy too.
No, that wasn’t sarcastic.
I suppose the best way to describe it as the female
version of High
Fidelity.
Rene Zellweger (Me, Myself and Irene, Jerry
Maguire) stars as a thirty-one year old
British woman who is so single she’s taken
to referring to herself as a spinster. So starts the angst of the movie, an often very cynical look
at the single life of a person approaching
middle age, feeling the pressure of being
beyond what society considers “marrying
age” and still unaffiliated.
Like High
Fidelity, the movie is narrated by the
main character, allowing for double the amount
of witty and wry observations.
The narration is consistent and does
the story well.
Zellweger’s comedy timing is nicely
honed and her chemistry with the other actors
is very solid… and speaking of the other
actors, the majority of the cast is
authentically British!
Everyone of any import (no pun
intended) in the film has a real British
accent with the amazing and unnoticeable
exception of Bridget Jones herself.
Very, very impressively, Zellweger
holds her own with a thorough, never forced,
always on, never wavering British accent
against all the real ones in the film.
What this says to me about her acting
ability is that she is on her way way
up, both in ability and confidence.
Working off of Hugh Grant (Four Weddings and Funeral, Mickey Blue Eyes), playing a glorious
scoundrel (his newfound favorite part ever
since the whole “incident”) and Colin
Firth (Shakespeare in Love), Zellweger
glides, stumbles and pounces her way through
the film, all at the appropriate times,
showing incredible acting grace and glowing
charm. The
supporting cast is just three-dimensional
enough to merit a part in the movie and still
not step on the story.
Jones
is a fun, engaging, not overlong comedy for
both men and women that should be an example
for other producers out to make the perfect
date movie.
