Cube
by Alexander Duke
HUGE
Has anyone seen this movie? It came out in 1997. A unique sci-fi
thriller that breaks all the rules, "Cube" follows five
strangers as they try to figure their way out of a maze. At first the
characters seem to be stereotypes, thrown together to teach us a lesson
about humanity a' la countless "Twilight Zone" episodes. But
the lessons in this film are a lot darker and a lot more hard to
decipher then anything Mr. Serling thought up. The heightening tensions
among the cast and ever-changing maze evoke enormous sympathy for the
group, whose kidnapping into this netherworld is a metaphor for the
human search for meaning and direction. The last third of the movie
holds the viewer in rapt attention, both in suspense at wondering if
they can escape the maze and amazement at the multi-layered plot twists.
This sci-fi sleeper is the thinking mans escape movie, with enough
action and melodrama to remain exciting while still evoking thoughtful
pause hours after one has left the theater.
