Reviews:
Duets This
by Michael Flanagan
Pathetic
An in-depth review of Duets would be giving the film too much
credit. Simply put, Duets
is BAD. One would not
generally expect such a movie to be good, but little "cutesy"
films have sometimes worked their way into the heart-strings of
entertainment-drowned audiences. Duets
will certainly drown you, but not with anything resembling
entertainment.
The plot, a group of pathetic people on the way to a national
Karaoke contest, is obviously ridiculous.
Perhaps an old-fashioned telling of such a story would have given
it a bit of "Dirty Dancing"-esque style.
Alas, the film lacks any style at all.
The biggest star, Gwyneth Paltrow, acts as if she were in a
fourth grade play . . . as a first grader.
Her father, Bruce Paltrow, directs the film, and perhaps daughter
Gwyneth felt the pressure from behind the camera.
Nevertheless, Gwyneth still proves to be a far worthier actor
than her daddy is a director.
The music, which one would expect to be the saving grace of a
Karaoke movie, is mediocre at best.
Sub standard songs performed in such an unimpressive fashion that
even Huey Lewis looks as if he's biding his time, waiting for the
paycheck.
In short, as it deserves to be put, Duets is about as good as a
singer at your local Karaoke bar, except not as entertaining.
