High
Fidelity
by Joe De Matteo
Super
Christian
has been telling me about this movie since he saw it in the
theaters. I
have to admit, I prefer senseless violence, exploding cars,
buildings and bridges, chase scenes; your basic good vs.
evil theme. So
sue me.
Anyway, I just finished watching John Cusack in High
Fidelity. The
problem I have with this movie is that John is getting a
little long in the tooth… and it’s starting to show.
If you’re a people watcher, like I am, you’ll
know what I mean. As
people get older, their facial and body structure change.
Their heads get bigger, those cute anomalies in their
features become larger and in some cases grotesque.
This extreme is not the case with John Cusack, but
that cute boyish look that enhanced the characters he’s
played over the years is fading fast.
In Being
John Malkovich, his faced look slimmer, and he wasn’t
trying to act quite so boyish.
But in this movie it’s almost like he resurrected
that character that was holding up the boom box trying to
woo Elisabeth Shue, and his face looked fuller in a middle
aged kind of way.
“Hey,”
you’re saying, “I though you gave this movie a Super.
It sounds like you’re panning it.”
O contra, mona mee, these things distracted
me. But John
Cusack did a great job, I liked his character, I got the
subtleties, and I absolutely loved the soundtrack. As far as the music is concerned, my favorite scene in the
movie was the singing of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It
On.” It was great, and thanks to the magic of modern DVD
technology, I rewatched it half a dozen times after the
movie was ended.
Another thing
I liked about it is that it could have ended at least three
times. They
were all good endings.
And then the real ending eased you into hanging
through the credits just to listen to the music.
Excellent.
I also like
the idea of Joan Cusack, John’s sister, being in this
picture. I
first noticed her in My Cousin Vinny and have
enjoyed her acting many times since.
Yes, a Super
movie. Buy the
DVD, you’ll want to see it over and over again, or just
have it going in the background to listen to the music.
In fact I’m going to buy the soundtrack.
