Chocolate
Covered Pretzel?
Mallrats
by
Christian De Matteo
Solid
Without a doubt, the least of the Kevin Smith
catalogue, Mallrats
is still proof of his natural ability with
the pen.
Forced to make the film by a studio
that wanted another Clerks,
Smith grudgingly put pen to paper and
turned out his salute to New Jersey mall
culture, continuing his wonderful
exposition of modern youth in language we
understand.
Starring Jason Lee who would go on to be the infamous
Banky Edwards of Chasing
Amy and Shannon Doherty, the film
centers around two friends (Lee and Jeremy
London) who get dumped on the same day and
their very different reactions and the
adventures that ensue.
Throw in a nude scene (and some
acting) by Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy), an anally obsessed Ben Affleck (Reindeer Games), and some physical hijinks by the ever popular Jason
Mewes and Kevin “Yeah, this is my
flick” Smith, and you’ve got some very
memorable lines, a very funny finale
(including the great Brian “I only play
guys named Hicks” O’Halleron), and a
nude scene by Joey Lauren Adams.
(Why does that last bit look
familiar?)
Topping all this off like the chocolate on a pretzel,
is the presence of comic legend, genius
and all-around old man, Stan “the Man”
Lee.
Any comic geek ever to turn a
four-colored page will burst with laughter
and feel a tear come to the eye during his
emotional exchange with Brodie.
While not covering anywhere near the intellectual
ground of Clerks
or the films that follow it (yes,
including even Jay
and Silent Bob Strike Back), the movie
is a fun pit stop on race track of
Smithian philosophies and ponderences.
A definite worthwhile rental, and worth owning if
you, like me, dig the idea of having the
whole Smith mythology on one shelf.
The movie is also impressive as
another rung on his ladder upwards as far
as writing, directing and coming up with
funky Star
Wars references.
And hell, herein lies the first appearance of the
Stinkpalm.
‘nuff
said.
