I
Want My Mummy…Again

For
a review of the main pros of The Mummy
Returns, see my review for The
Mummy.
It’s rare in a sequel, but Stephen
Sommers has kept the enjoyment and tone of
the original, as well as the humor,
enjoyment, and balance.
He
has also gone a step further: he has crafted
a great follow-up. Most sequels try to do what the first did over again.
Not Sommers. The main villain of this sequel may be the mummy, but we find
an even greater evil in The Scorpion King,
played by WWF’s The Rock.
The Rock is only physically in the
movie for about three minutes, which avoids
that whole “star power” criticism.
Much like the horror films of the
30’s, The Mummy Returns mixes
another villain in so that the old villain
has someone to play off of.
The addition allows for more and
better storytelling, and a bigger plot to
match the bigger special effects.
Don’t worry, though, the lives of
everyone on the planet are still threatened.
Sommers
has also added a kiss of death: a little
boy, Alex O’Connel, the ten year old son
of the now married Rachel Weisz and Fraser.
Not only does the kid work great as a
character, but he steals some scenes,
including almost recreating the library
shelves scene from the original in a “like
mother, like son” moment.
Sure,
there are a lot of huge Lucas-esque special
effects: battles, unbelievable walls of
water, Anubis army wolf men thing mummies,
evil gremlin pygmy mummies, demons of hell,
and a large lobster that’s supposed to
look like a scorpion, and sure, some effects
look like effects (as they should. This movie is supposed to be good for kiddies, too), but all
adds to a lot of fun, bundles of laughs,
pure entertainment, and, of course, lots and
lots and lots of bugs.
