| An incredibly well mixed tale based somewhat in
reality, as I lived in Washington D.C. at the time the movie
replicates and yes there were scabs and there was a lot of mixed
emotions on the fans' part!! By well mixed, I mean the story,
direction, acting, blend of humor, music and of course the
cheerleaders was incredibly well produced but not too 'sappy'.
Even lady friends, who don't love sports or movies, thoroughly
enjoyed the movie!! |

Sports
Replacements
by Michael Flanagan
Solid
As far as sports movies go,
The Replacements ain’t all that bad.
I don’t usually enjoy film based on
sport. My
theory is, if I wanted to see people playing
football, I’d watch…football.
There are some great sports movies that
even I will sit and watch on a Sunday afternoon
with a can of beer and a bowl of pretzels.
It goes back to The Bad News Bears.
That’s the essence of a great sports
flick. And
then there’s The Natural.
Not as happily enjoyable as Bears,
but it brings out the baseball enthusiast in
everyone. Bull
Durham is an amazing sports film (with a
neat bathtub scene.)
And if you count Teen Wolf as a
basketball movie, then I thoroughly enjoyed
that, too.
All these films have in some way what The
Replacements has: character.
And by character, I mean
the identity of the cast, not the personality of
the film. Watching
all these sports guys get along and insult and
praise each other in one breath is just plain
great. And
Keanu Reeves brings his boyishly charming
version to this role, and pulls it off just as
he should.
The romance between Reeves and Brooke
Langton almost got too deep for this kind of movie, but
then it returned to the shallow side of the
mindless sports film pool where it belongs.
On top of all that, Gene Hackman proves
that he’s an amazing actor, acting the pants
off of everyone else in the movie in what’s
probably the part with the fewest lines.
All in all, a joy to watch,
if only just once.
