The
Royal Tannenbaums
by Mark Capitelli
Super
This quirky stylized film
about a scummy, weasely old father reuniting his
dysfunctional family of geniuses is wonderful.
I’ll agree that it is an acquired taste,
but if you are a fan of limited release,
independent films, as well as a fan of Gene
Hackman behaving badly, you will enjoy this film.
Despite what would otherwise be disturbing
themes, this film is amusing from beginning to end
and offers a lot of laughs if you like insensitive
humor and bizarre characters in a candy-like
seventies-ish setting.
I know I do.

Double

Gene Hackman is great, and as Royal
Tenenbaum, he's even better, he's double
good! In an interview I heard that
Morgan Freeman said he was genuinely
afraid when, in Unforgiven, with
Little Bill Daggett (Hackman) standing
over his shoulder and calmly warning, the
captured Ned Logan (Freeman) as to what
would happen to him if he didn't
cooperate. Freeman said that even
though he know he was making a film, he
was terrified by Hackman's intensity. |

Royal is the worst kind of scoundrel, oh,
not because he's always conning his own
family, but because you never know what's
true and what is not. Never.
Watch this movie more than once and tell
if that that is not a true
statement. I don't know what Owen Wilson, Wes Anderson's
intentions were when they wrote the part,
but I do know that you can convincingly
argue his sincerity at almost every turn.
He got me so angry at times I just wanted
to...stab him in the stomach. And as
Pagoda did, I'd probably have taken him to
a hospital or nursed him back to health
right after I did. |

All I can say is I'm glad they didn't cast
Jack Nicholson. Don't get me wrong,
he'd have done a great job. Can't
you see him as Royal? Sure you
can. But Hackman looked perfectly
1/2 Jewish, all rascal (with a heart?).
Of course a film can't get a HUGE from me
on the weight of one actor's
performance. All the acting was
wonderful. Angelica Houston, Gwyneth Paltrow,
Ben Stiller, and could you believe the new
look for Bill Murray and Danny Glover?
The Owen brothers are always
remarkable. The combo of Owen and
Luke Wilson with Wes Andersen is pure dynamite.
I can't see anyone not liking this
movie. It's quirky, sure, but it's
fun and it's unique, as well. |

DVD
The thing you must have, if you're a movie
fan, is get this great deal on the 2 disc Criterion
Edition DVD. It's loaded with stuff
and that's important for two
reasons. 1. You're going to want to
get into all the extra goodies.
Oh yeah, 2. This is one multiple watch
movie. |
