This is Spinal Tap by

BIG
This Is Spinal Tap is a wickedly fun
“mockumentary” which follows low-grade,
Brit-rock band, Spinal Tap, on a failing tour of
the U.S. One thing that I found about this movie
is that it is very believable, in an
unbelievable way. This can be attributed to the
fact that it was written by and starred
Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Michael
McKean, and Rob Reiner (who also directs). When
the writers themselves play out their script,
they can certainly bring it to life in ways an
outside actor cannot.
If you have a sense of humor, you will be
laughing from the opening screen to the ending
credits. It is the perfect movie to put you into
a fun mood. Riddled with quirky antics,
mind-numbing debates about topics such as the
best size of bread, and amusing characters
(Billy Crystal as a mime-waiter), This Is Spinal
Tap is a loveable movie for the masses. It also
tells classic story of a rock band, which had
been begun by the best of friends, had members
coming and going (over 37), and deals with the
girlfriend who tries to take over and use her
creative “talent” which, in turn, ruins the
friendship and the band. Done with a humorous
twist focusing on blunders, confusion,
silliness, exaggeration, being lost, and dirty
songs, over the darker side of rock, such as
drugs, sex and alcohol, this movie is light and
enjoyable.
This movie is very well done. The camera work,
editing, and film used creates a
documentary-type look for the film. The acting
is brilliant. One would never realize that these
American actors were not the British pals they
appeared to be. There are no noticeable slips of
accent of any kind, or are there any smirks, or
any facial/ body expressions, which show the
actors apart from their roles. The script
doesn’t wander, and there are no irrelevant
scenes, which tend to happen a lot in movies.
The characters have a strong sense of their
selves and stay in tune with that. Nigel is
always very particular about everything,
including his bread and his guitars, whereas
David is always being swayed by his girlfriend’s
opinions, and Derek tries to be clever and
helpful even though he’s less than wise.
All in all I would recommend this movie be seen
by anyone looking for a good laugh. It is not a
classic, and it will not bring you wisdom, or
any thoughts for that matter, besides “where can
I find a mime-waiter?” This Is Spinal Tap is a
great movie to watch with a group of friends and
a large pizza.
