Expect The Unexpected
By Lauren Mende
HUGE
If you’re looking for a movie to take you to the edge of your
seat, have you biting your nails, and asking who dun it, The Usual
Suspects is right up your alley. This spine tingling thriller has
you guessing until the very end, and along the way taking sharp
unexpected twists and turns. Including almost everything from
corrupt cops, to hijackings, to drug busts; this film gives a nice
change of perspective seeing the story from both law enforcement and
the criminals themselves. |
| If the long list of extremely talented actors doesn’t draw your
attention, the mind-blowing plot is sure to lure you in. This film
takes you along for the provoking ride with a U.S. customs officer
who is trying to figure out what happened at an explosion and what
was assumed to be a drug trade that occurred on a ship in Miami.
Every character and every line in this movie are so meticulously
laid out and delivered that you believe every actor is their
character. When it finally comes down to the end of the movie and
you figure out the mind-boggling finish along with the other
characters, you will constantly think back to other parts of the
movie, bringing together the whole plot. Every time I see this film
I pick up on more and more information during the beginning and
middle of this film, that make the ending that much better.
What truly impressed me about the movie was the way the dialogue
for each character was so unique and intriguing. It helped you
understand and get to know each individual character. Also, the way
the movie was laid out was phenomenal. It took you from past to
present, forcing you to stay alert and listen and watch the movie
and what story it was telling.
I would highly recommend this movie to any mystery and/or action
lover, or anyone who needs a nice change from the standard movie
mold that today’s cinema consistently uses. |

| A New
Classic: The Usual Suspects
by J. E. De Matteo
HUGE
Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Angeles With
Dirty Faces and now The Usual Suspects; all
unendingly rewatchable and each has a line up of
great characters and great performances.
The action scenes in many cases are just
barely believable, but they're so cool, I can't
get enough of them. The most outrageous is
McManus swinging back and forth, lining up on
two opponents who just happen to be wrestling
with two of his buddies, and pulls off two
perfect killing shots; unbelievable, but
extremely compelling, not to mention the fact
that it's a great insight into the character.
There are so many actors (and characters) in
this movie that I like. Fenster, my
favorite character, is perfectly portrayed by
Benicio Del Toro, now one of my favorite young
actors. And Dan Hedaya, who's face starts
the repetitious phrase in my head: "I
know he can get the job, but can he do the
job?," from Joe Versus the
Volcano.
One of the reasons, I think, that this movie
has achieved classic statues is all so many memorable
quotes and cool statements. Just the interrogation
scenes have more than most movies have in
total. "He'll flip ya."
Cop: "I can put you in Queens on the
night of the hijacking." Hockney:
"Really? I live in Queens, did you put that
together yourself, Einstein? Got a team of
monkeys working around the clock on this?"
The DVD is especially good, I wouldn't give
it up for the world.
