Turning
the Tables: Whipped

Solid
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.
I love a good sex comedy.
Hit me with immature, female anatomy
related humor, throw in some gross-out humor
on top of it and I am a happy, juvenile
little camper.
Whipped
provides exactly this.
After the surprising success of The Whole Nine Yards, the studio decided to release this older film
of Amanda Peet’s (who you saw just about
all of in Nine Yards), a vulgar sex comedy about three “scammers” (players
who try to crush a lot in modern terminology) and the hot and perfect young
lady they all happen to meet.
Imagine Swingers
meets American
Pie and Me, Myself and Irene.
Peet does a great job being simultaneously sweet and
wicked, completely believable in her role.
The movie provides some very good
gross-out laughs (the salad tossing tale
gets the cake), some poor man’s Farrelly
brothers laughs, and some excellent diner
dialogue that you can always look forward
to. To
spice up the mix, writer/director Peter M.
Cohen does some characters talking
individually to the camera stuff, which is
sometimes pretty funny as well.
Cohen’s ear for everyday speech is
very good, good enough that he perverts it
very well for comedy.
Brian Van Holt (who looks just like a Brian Van Holt
should look), Zorie Barber, and Jonathan
Abrahams are all very good, if not
particularly likable, as the three scammers,
each with a very distinct personality and a
real feel.
I expect to see them pop up in more
stuff, especially Barber. Judah Domke is also excellent as their sad, married friend,
providing a bunch of laughs.
The movie bombed terribly, a fate it didn’t
deserve.
You won’t think it’s the funniest
sex comedy you’ve ever seen, but it is a
very enjoyable watch and will have you
burying your face in your hands at least
three times, as well as laughing out loud a
good amount.
Though not an overly surprising
ending, Cohen keeps it up just long enough
to make his very entertaining point.
And make sure you watch the credits, too.
It’s one of those.
