Even
Funnier Than Christopher Lambert: Zoolander
by Michael Flanagan
Super
Smart and Funny.
A rarity in today’s environment of teen
comedy flicks that just make you wish you were
watching Animal House again. The problem may be that writers can’t write smart if they
want laugh-out-loud comedy.
It seems that laughing out loud is only
brought about by placing teenagers in the same area
with unusual bodily fluids and letting the “good
times roll,” as they say.
In Zoolander, writers Drake Sather and
director/actor Ben Stiller have created one of the
most original, intelligently funny movies in a long
time…but it’s not always laugh-out-loud funny.
Not that that’s a bad thing! There are moments when I was doubled over with laughter, and
those moments don’t hinder the movie at all.
Never reducing itself to “stupid comedy,”
Zoolander always holds an impressive level of
under-the-top humor and intelligence.
The balance of laugh-out-loud and awed jovial
chuckling is near perfect, but there’s nothing in
the film that’s next day water cooler worthy.
That is mainly because the humor of the film
is at a level beyond “you had to be there;” the
film plays with such an unusual balance at times
that it leaves you wondering where you’re going,
but not wondering what the point is.
The point is obvious: Models
are really really really really good-looking…and
incredibly dumb.
Not all models, the film points out.
Some models are maniacal evil
world-dominating groups who strive to keep sweat
shops populating the world so that said really
really incredibly good-looking people can remain so.
This is a film that creates a world where
reporters are smart, though easily susceptible to
stories of past bulimia and quick group orgies with
little people.
This world consists of conspiracy-avoiding
hand models hiding out in New York City cemeteries,
and evil, piano-tie inventing henchman hypnotizing
models to murder for the sake of fashion.
This is a world of which some of us may
dream, a world where one may slip into a moment of
dialogue and action from our favorite films, the
whole while being accompanied by said film’s
original score…
But I digress.
Zoolander, simply put, is a relief.
It’s not about teenagers and bodily fluid,
or cute kids being funny, or a mismatched, multi
racial pairing in yet another coincidental and silly
situation, and though it is based on a television
show of the same creative team, it’s still not a
sequel. Zoolander
is about stupidity while being smart and funny.
That’s an unusual and welcome combination.

Zoolander
by Mark Capitelli
HUGE
Yes, I gave it a huge. Why? Because it
gets better and better the more I see it.
It is not a fantastic film, but it is a good
time. It makes a great party movie.
It’s also perfect for when you just want to
have fun with a movie, not be challenged or
impressed.
There are more cameos in
this film than anything else I’ve ever seen.
The actors are fun to watch, the story is
actually entertaining and well thought-out (as much
as it can be) social satire, and the jokes are
there. Want
to laugh at stupid people?
Zoolander’s perfect for that. I
highly recommend the DVD which is packed with bonus
features.
