ANNOUNCEMENT
2007 will mark Marconi's second foray behind the lens as
a writer/director with his new feature film; THE TAKE
- AKA; KALEIDOSCOPE, a gritty geopolitical
thriller set in present day Europe. Inspired by
true-life events, Marconi describes the film as "a
character-driven love story in the vein of Hitchcock's
NOTORIOUS. Told against the background of
political intrigue, it's characters must confront their
personal demons to ultimately overcome some of the
run-away and damaging policies driving the United States
today."
"Like the 60's and 70's, these are turbulent times."
Marconi said. "The films and film-makers of those times
stood up and addressed what they saw in society.
Classic films like Z, THE PARALLAX VIEW, 3 DAYS OF
THE CONDOR, MARATHON MAN, BATTLE FOR ALGIERS, DAY OF THE
JACKAL. These films have served as my inspiration
over the years. Like in ENEMY OF THE STATE, I want to
give my story a resonance/undercurrent that addresses
some of the issues we face today. Meat with the
potatoes, so to speak, something for the audience to
chew on when they leave the theater.
"As the success of FARENHEIT 911 and SYRIANA
have aptly demonstrated, there's a massive thirst out
there for anything attempting to address this vacuum of
public/media discourse about some of the most important
events that've shaped our country and our world in
recent years. We have to find our passion that drives
us along on these projects, and this is mine.
And as NORTH BY NORTHWEST along with the
CONVERSATION and 3 DAYS OF THE CONDOR were
Marconi's inspiration for ENEMY OF THE STATE -
namely that of the innocent man on the run. In THE
TAKE, Marconi again went to Hitchcock, this time the
inspiration came from NOTORIOUS, Cary Grant, the
FBI Agent, pressuring Ingrid Bergman to spy on her
ex-boyfriend played by Claude Rains.
"Hitchcock was a master of the weaving of a central
love story along with the terrorist plot. Sydney Pollock
also pulled it off in 3 DAYS OF THE CONDOR. And
more recently; THE ENGLISH PATIENT and THE
CONSTANT GARDNER. That is my intention with THE
TAKE.".
Visually, Marconi sees his film as fast-paced thriller,
an ENEMY OF THE STATE meets SYRIANA. "It's
a movie that will entertain, emotionally and visually."
Stylistically, Marconi hopes to replicate the visual and
editing pace of Tony Scott as exhibited in his films;
SPY GAMES, MAN ON FIRE, ENEMY OF THE STATE , and the
three dimensional characterizations of Michael Mann as
seen in HEAT and THE INSIDER.
"The love story is the emotional core of the film. This
has always been my intention. Having met several times
now with Gabriel Yared, the composer who scored THE
ENGLISH PATIENT and THE TALENTED MY RIPLEY,
and he has expressed a desire to do the score to help
bring out this emotional quality which is so necessary
in this type of film. The love story will anchor in the
audience in with emotion, but beneath it, will be a
story that will hopefully give them something to
ponder."
